Q12436 - HOWTO: Updating Hach WIMS Remote using a self-update package

This article explains how to install a patch upgrade to an existing Hach WIMS Remote installation. To install a WIMS Remote patch, you must already have the product installed from a release DVD disc.

To install the patch, you have to do steps on both Hach WIMS Server and the devices and/or tablets where Hach WIMS Remote are installed. The Hach WIMS Server will have the Server Setup installed with access to the Hach WIMS DBMS, and Hach WIMS Client.

I. Extract the Files on the Hach WIMS Server:

  1. Download the patch from the Hach website or from the link provided to you by Hach
  2. Extract it to any location on the client machine that has Server Setup installed. After extraction, you should see a file structure similar to this:



II. Run Server Setup:

  1. Start Server Setup, login with SUPER user credentials and go to the "Upload Updates" tab
  2. Click the "..." button and navigate to the location you chose in step 2, then select the "silentUpgrade.exe" file there
  3. Click the Execute button on the far right
  4. Wait for the upload to finish, your screen should look similar to this:


    This screen tells you that you have successfully uploaded patch version 2.0.1 of the Remote Client.
  5. Quit Server Setup

III. Run Hach WIMS Client:

  1. Log into the Hach WIMS client
  2. Open Admin Console from the System Setup menu option
  3. Find "Minimum Remote Client Version:" under General Settings
  4. Change the value to the new version as shown below. For example, if you uploaded version 2.0.2 via Server Setup, you need to change the Admin Console setting to 202, as shown below
  5. Once changed, click Save Changes button

Note: You MUST click the "Save Changes" button, otherwise it will not update the setting.

IV. Update Hach WIMS Remote:

  1. Exit from Hach WIMS Remote on the device, if it's running
  2. From the directory where Hach WIMS Remote is installed, double-click the REMOTEUP.exe program and wait for the update process to finish
  3. Log back in to Hach WIMS Remote to start using the new version

NOTE: When upgrading to BOD Manager or WIMS to version 7.2 using the patch you will need to manually copy the HQD_VCOM.INF and HQD_VCOM.CAT files (found in the same folder as the HACH_WIMS_CLIENT.EXE file) to the C:\windows\inf folder. Keep in mind the INF folder maybe hidden as a System folder. In addition, you will need to automatically add this line, HQ40D_USES_SERIAL_PORT=yes, to the Hach_WIMS_Client.ini file (also in the same folder as the HACH_WIMS_CLIENT.EXE file). At least with one client with an XP system, I had to upgrade the driver of the USB Hub to a later version to get the hub to find and register the HQ40d device. I did this from the device manager.
