Q13380 - HOWTO: Install Hach WIMS Remote

How to: Install and Setup Hach WIMS Remote for operation

NOTE: If you are installing on a Windows 7 OS platform, you may need to navigate to the CD Drive with the Hach WIMS Remote installation on it, and right click on PlatformInstallerBootstrapRemote.exe and select Run as Administrator. Installation will go through without errors just running it, but permissions may prevent installation of the Hach WIMS Remote database system - and you won't see any errors, it just won't install.

NOTE: You may also have to right click and run Hach WIMS Remote as administrator in the same fashion in order to sync Remote database to the Hach WIMS Server DBMS.

1.     Download install file and run it

In addition to installing the WIMS Remote application, the install package also installs MS SQL Server Express 2005. It installs it as a named instance so it should not interfere with other installations. By default it also install SQL Server management studio for convenience.

During install you will need to select the type of database your master Hach WIMS utilizes (Oracle or SQL Server). After selecting the "Master database type" the default Provider selection should work fine. The text box titled "The address..." refers to the server name of the database, for Oracle try "xe" and for SQL Server try "localhost\OPSSQL" or try "<computer name>\OPSSQL".

2.     Configure config file (this should be ready to operate after install so this is more informational) following instructions in Q12148

See article Q12148 and Q11976 for information on setting up the INI config file. This includes how to specify the master and remote database connections.

Article Q11976 contains generic Hach WIMS data about connecting to databases. To apply this to WIMS Remote match the last words in the identifiers (WIMS_MASTER_CONNECTION_DATASOURCE = HACHWIMS_CONNECTION_DATASOURCE) to find the appropriate information.

3.     Obtain the patch for WIMS Remote (version 204 as of this writing, Apr. ‘11).

I.     Run the patch to extract the contents to a folder (create a new empty folder for this)

II.    Run Hach WIMS Server Setup (entering connection and credential information).

III.  Select the Upload Updates tab.

1.     Chick on the ellipsis button in the Location of Update Package ‘silentUpdate.exe’ file section and navigate to the folder you emptied the patch into. Select the silentUpdate.exe file.

2.     Verify the version is correct.

IV.   Click Execute to upload the patch to the database. This will allow each installation of WIMS Remote to upgrade itself the next time it is logged in.

V.    Close Server Setup.

VI.   Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the Hach WIMS folder and right click on it and select Properties (this is the root folder name, one level above the exe’s location).

1.     Uncheck the Read-only check box and click on OK (the check box should be empty not checked or gray).

2.     From the next window that opens select Apply changes to this folder, sub folders and files.

3.     Click OK

4.     Open HACH WIMS and select System Setup | Admin Console (you must be logged in as a super user to gain access to this menu option).

I.     In the General Settings tab ensure the Minimum Remote Client Version value matches the version just uploaded (as of 4/22/2011 the version is 2.0.4, but just enter 204 for the value in Admin Console)

II.    Click Save Changes when exiting

5.     Start Hach WIMS Remote – you should see messages indicating it is upgrading

6.     Start Hach WIMS Remote again and it will synchronize with the master database then close again – with an ending message box saying: “Hach WIMS Remote will now close”

7.     Restart Hach WIMS Remote it should say “Root database was automatically upgraded…” Click OK

8.     Restart Hach WIMS Remote and log in using super, super

I.     Click OK on the next window to start the download process.

II.    Select the date you wish to start downloading data from. Keep in mind that there could be a lot of data and it could take a very long time so pick a date that is as close the present time as you can to only get the data you need.

III.  Of course it will close again and you will need to restart it to see that the variables and data entry forms you need are present.

NOTE: You can setup a dashboard for WIMS Remote using the following line Q12151. This is a convenient way of operating the remote software instead of using the menu for the few featured that are needed.

NOTE: To add a new facility you should follow this article Q12149 - keep in mind the procedure in this article will remove all data in the WIMS Remote database, so add facilities then go into the field to collect data. The above article should also be followed when adding a new variable or data entry method.
