Q10594 - FAQ: Why upgrade to Hach WIMS?

The OPS 32/EZ software has reached the end of its active life and support will end for this product on December 31, 2010.  Your current OPS 32 support contract will be valid through its current expiration date.  If that expiration occurs in 2010 and you wish to renew your contract through to the end of 2010, we will prorate your support contract to the end of December 31, 2010.  After the end date, Hach will only be able to provide ad hoc support at $200/hour.

While you are still on active support, you will receive a 20% discount on an upgrade to any Hach Water Information Management Solution™ (Hach WIMS™) product. Discounts will also be applied to the purchase of concurrent users and any interfaces you may need. This offer is valid until December 31, 2010*!

Do I have to upgrade to Hach WIMS?

No.  However, if you are looking for a long term solution, we strongly advise you upgrade to Hach WIMS (previously OPS SQL) so that you can keep up with the most current changes in EPA regulations, electronic reporting formats, etc.  As you upgrade your hardware you might find the OPS 32/EZ with the MSAccess database will not be compatible with the new hardware and OS structures (such as Vista), then you will need to upgrade to an appropriate Hach WIMS product.

What is the benefit to upgrade to Hach WIMS?

The benefit to upgrading your system is having the latest features and functions within a more robust and stable database platform.  Along with the superior architecture of WIMS  with native utilization of Microsoft SQL Server including stored procedures, triggers, and tuned indexes, some of the new, powerful, features of WIMS include:

  • Meeting your Electronic Reporting Requirements (eDMRs)
  • Audit Trail for a complete record as to who and when data is entered, changed or deleted.
  • Data Approval - Approve data and lock it down from unintended data entry.
  • More Variable Types: one minute, five minute, fifteen minute, one hour, four hours and daily.
  • Time Stamped Data & Events
  • Design and control Multiple Logbooks assigned to individuals or groups
  • Events can be recorded providing tools for inspection logs, Industrial Pretreatment and more

The needs and requests of our customers are always a high priority however; the answer to some requests MIGHT be to upgrade your software to an appropriate WIMS product.  We have done our best to make this upgrade as painless as possible both technically and financially.

What happens to my OPS 32 data?

Your OPS 32 database is imported into WIMS with a utility that comes with WIMS.  Your variables, data, spread reports, locations, forms, etc... are automatically transferred into WIMS.  Your Daily Report Generator (DRG) reports are imported and converted to Spread Reports.  Your shortcuts can be converted to our new dashboards to give you the same look and feel.  WIMS has a very similar menu structure and little additional training is required.  The "canned" NPDES report (i.e. Report Pac, NPDES menu item) reports are not converted.  If you use the canned NPDES report (not a Spread Report NPDES report) you may need services to help you create your report in WIMS.

Which Hach WIMS product is best for me ?

Two important determining factors are: 1) How many concurrent users do you need, and 2) The size of your current OPS 32 database, including the number and type of variables.  When migrating from OPS 32 to Hach WIMS your database size may grow 3 to 5 times due to additional audit trail functionality and new database structures. If your facility has a large database in OPS 32, greater than 500MB, WIMS Professional or Enterprise will be the only viable solution.  For facility databases between 300 and 500 MB, we may be able to explore some options including database manipulation to allow the use of WIMS Multiuser  (4 GB database limit), which we will discuss with you.  Facility databases below 300 MB will be able to upgrade to WIMS MultiUser or Single User in most cases.
