Upgrading an MSDE instance to SQL Server 2005 when .NET 3.5 SP1 is installed may fail

Issue

Consider the following scenario:

  • You are running an OPS SQL edition that installs its own MSDE (SQL Server 2000) database
  • You are upgrading to Hach WIMS
  • You have version 3.5 SP1 of the .NET framework installed

The Hach WIMS Platform Bootstrapper will attempt to upgrade MSDE to SQL Server 2005 by launching the SQL Server 2005 setup program with instructions to upgrade MSDE. The setup program may then crash with the following error:

OR, you may get a message saying that the MS SQL Ugrade advisor failed with error -1 and a blank error message.

The Bootstrapper will then report the following error:

This is a known problem with the SQL Server 2005 setup program.

Work-around

Once SQL installation starts, create a subdirectory BPAClient under C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\BPA directory.and copy BPAClient.dll (from the sibling bin directory) into
this directory:

Setup should then proceed fine
